About National Museum of Colombo

The Colombo National Museum, established in 1877 by Governor William Gregory, is Sri Lanka�s largest and oldest museum housed in a grand Italianate building. It showcases over 100,000 artifacts�from ancient Buddha statues and Kandyan royal regalia to colonial-era weaponry and natural history exhibits�offering a comprehensive journey through the island�s cultural and natural heritage.

How to Get There

Located in Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) near Independence Square, it's easily accessible via tuk-tuk, bus, or taxi from central Colombo. It's just a short walk from Nelum Pokuna Theatre or the Kotalawala Road bus stops.

Quick Facts

Open daily 9?am�5?pm (closed on public holidays), the museum�s entry fee is 1,200?LKR for foreigners (adult), 600?LKR for children, with combo tickets available that include the Natural History Museum next door.Highlights include the royal throne of King Wimaladharmasuriya?II and a 9th?century Bodhisattva sculpture .
